Gen Z Audience Focus—Honors Project

Introduction

Access the full blog here

This blog was created as my final project for my graduation from Barrett, The Honor’s College at Arizona State University. The content featured here was written based on interviews conducted with communications professionals and members of Gen Z themselves. These articles explore different themes related to Gen Z, including characteristics and digital habits of the generation, Gen Z in the workplace and communication best practices.

The research, recruitment, and creation of this project took place over the course of two semesters. My intention behind creating it was not only to learn more about this topic myself, but to create a resource for communications professionals seeking insights into Gen Z. Even as a member of Gen Z myself, I have experienced firsthand how difficult it can be to target young adults. This project is an attempt to demystify Gen Z and advocate for new and fresh approaches when it comes to interacting with its members.

Excerpt from my final project:

Defined by Pew Research Center as those born after 1996, the term “Gen Z” is being used to categorize the newest generation of young adults coming of age and entering the workforce.  Largely because of the estimated $360 billion in buying power held by this demographic (Fromm, 2022),  it has become imperative for communications professionals from various industries to understand the unique challenges that come with the first digitally native generation… A key characteristic of this generation is its openness to change and constantly evolving values and even lexicon, adding to the challenges faced by many communications professionals looking to clearly define them.
